The world has no shortage of geriatric certification programs, but not all of these programs are created equally. Entrusted by the AMA is the CGP, or Certified Geriatric Pharmacist certification which can be obtained only through their system. Health care professionals and observers the country and world over have expressed their approval of the CGP program, and it has come to be the gold standard in certification in the field of geriatric medicine. While there are over a thousand such programs available in the US alone, only the CGP has set itself above and beyond with a regimen of certification that has been looked at as a leader in the health care industry.

Of course, a great deal of the public awareness for geriatric certification has come from the media and what we have learned about the problems and complications that come along with medicines and seniors. While much of the focus lately has been on cost, there are also far too many stories each year of unnecessary deaths due to overdose and poor judgment when it comes to the prescribing and dispensing of medication for seniors. In 2003 alone, more than a hundred thousand lives were lost and a hundred billion dollars wasted in the health care industry due to what had later been determined to be poor judgment when it came to senior medications.

As the country becomes more and more aware of the medication related problems facing our seniors, the need for intense geriatric certification becomes more and more prominent. In the coming years, the baby boomer generation will reach and exceed retirement age and begin dealing with the problem associated with aging. This will mean higher health care costs, more medications being prescribed, and a huge influx in the need for long term care. Now, more than ever, the need is there for the CGP program and a standard in place for the medications associated with geriatric medicine.
