By remembering that these people are more then just elderly who need help, one can remember why they chose to help these people and help them to keep their dignity. A geriatric nurse is a special type of nurse. Not only do these nurses know how to handle the varied health issues that the elderly develop, but they are able to handle the psychological issues as well. The physical person is a portion of what needs to be addressed. The psychological portion of the person is often the hardest part to handle for the nurses as well as the patient.

A geriatric nurse must know how to deal with the loss of memory and normal functions due to illnesses like Alzheimer, a geriatric nurse must be able to handle the stresses of dealing with people who can be aggressive or emotional and who will not get better. This job can be extremely depressing for those who work in it; it can also bring great joy. The caregivers of the elderly often know they are doing something good, as they try to bring comfort to the elderly and to their families. The families appreciate the care that their loved ones are getting that the family could not give. The geriatric nurses can be like angels to watch over and ease the suffering associated with old age through the caring nature that urged them in to the field.
